setting up the network path for workstations

M

In the article "Splitting a access database, or how to run ms-access in a
multiuser mode" Albert D. Kallal states that you should not use drive letters
and mapping to link the front end of an application, on workstations, to the
backend on the server. Instead, use UNC as the path name.

My question is, if I put the front end of the application on a disk, to
distribute to users, how can I make it so the user can just copy the front
end .mde file to their computer, start up the application, and have the front
end link to the tables in the back end. How will it know the path, coming
from different workstations (or perhaps, using copies of the backend in
different companies servers, and each company has multiple workstations. How
will the frontends know the path to that servers Backend)?

Also, how can I get an icon to appear on the desktop that will launch the
frontend, once it is installed on the workstation?

Thanks
Mark

Responded to in another newsgroup. Please crosspost to a few
appropriate newsgroups in the newsgroups line of your newsgroup
software (separated by commas) rather than multiposting individual
postings to multiple newsgroups. Assuming you even need to post to
more than one newsgroup in the first place.

We ask this is because different people can respond to your postings
in different newsgroups duplicating effort on our part.

Tony,

Two things:
1) I would be happy to do the multiposting thing you describe, except I am
not sure what to do. I am posting to
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx

Where it says OFFICE DISCUSSION GROUPS, I move the mouse over Access
Database, and the click on the topic in the dropdown box that seems most
appropriate. How do I get it to post in more than one topic?

2) The person that responded to the post in the other listing, while they
did give some information on creating icons, did not respond to my questions.
It appears that once a response is given to a post, even if it is off the
topic, no one else responds thereafter. How can one get help from someone
else who might know the answer to the question posted?

If you have any insight on how I can improve my posting, I would appreciate
your help. Also, if you know the answer to the questions posted in this
thread, I would appreciate help with that too.

Thanks
Mark

Hmm, good point. I don't use the web interface so I hadn't thought
about this problem.

No, quite often folks do respond if they feel there is additional
information they might have.

And I did respond in another newsgroup.
microsoft.public.access.setupconfig Which is how I noticed that you
had multi posted.

Assuming you're going through msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups, look in the
bottom right-hand corner of the window when you're posting. There should be
an "Advanced Options" hyperlink there that will let you enter the names of
other newsgroups (separated with semi-colons)

Sure, but someone who only uses the web interface wouldn't even know
where to find the other precise newsgroup names, etc, etc.

The URL for the newsgroup includes its full name. However, you're probably
right that most people wouldn't think to look there.
