Settings for Characters!

Is there a way to change the settings in word 2000 so that if you happen to
need to type in the :) in a document that is does not show up as a happy
face? it changes as if it is a web document!

any and all help appreciated!

Slow but functional -- type in colon space parenthesis space -- that
second space in important. Then go back an delete the first space.
This approach also prevents 12th from showing the th as a superscript.
