Setup failed to locate a valid qualifying product on my machine???

Hi there,
I have just bought a new Dell laptop and am trying to install my Office XP
Professional license that I bought back in 2002 on it. I have a valid product
key, and it is a legal license.

After I put the product key in, I get an error message that reads:
"Setup failed to locate a valid qualifying product on your machine. Please
select the drive where a qualifying product can be found."

When I click on my c or d drive, it simply says: Setup was unable to locate
a qualifying product.

??????
Any idea what this means and how I can load my legal license onto my new
laptop? I don't relish going out to buy a new copy of office when I think the
one I have should work just fine.

It means that your version of Office is an upgrade and as such you have no
qualifying product installed or available.
I suggest you find the qualifying product you origonally had, Works maybe?

PS A new PC, you have uninstalled the trial version of Office, if one was
supplied, havent you?

Thank you DL. You are right... I forgot that when I bought this five years
ago, it was an upgrade license. My new laptop doesn't have works (or
anything!) on it. Ugh... I wanted to just transfer the license from my old
laptop to my new laptop and thought I could just install it. Does this mean I
have to go buy a new license?

You would either have to buy a retail, full, edition of Office, or Ebay, or
similar, for an early edition of Works which can be used as a qualifying
app.
You dont need the qualifying app installed, you just need the cd to point to
when your upgrade complains

PS you must uninstall any trial edition first
