Shape and layers

I am using Visio 2003 Professional. An engineer has sent me a CAD drawing,
and I've converted it to a Visio drawing. There are a lot of items that I
want to filter out. Is there a way that I can click on an item/shape and
find out what layer it is in?

Format > Layer will show the current layers for a shape.

I new to visio, I was hoping you could shed some light on a poroblem i have
I can not get the layers to hide. I go into layers property and de-select
visible but the layer are still there.

Any idea?
