Shared borders issue? FP2003

R

All of my pages are showing the same title, and when I change/correct one,
they all duplicate. Navigation view shows correct titles for each page, as
do folders, page properties. What am I missing?

Sounds like the updates for the FP server extensions that correct this have
not been applied.

My website is on the Radio Home page of Windows Media this month, and the
Windows Media player views are causing a huge overload with my webhost. I
was advised that my Front Page top and left borders reload with every page
change, and that is causing the problem. How do I reset my website so that
top and left borders do NOT reload when pages change.

If your left and top borders are shared borders, they will always reload
with the pages - they are part of the pages, just as much as the page
content. If they are not shared borders, please explain how they are
loaded into the page. I hesitate to ask for a link to the page :)

The only way to stop these borders from loading with every page change
is to use Frames - not a place I advise going to.

I just emailed the link to rxs-enterprises.

Websites designed by other software don't reload borders on page change, do
they? I am accustomed to seeing them stay put.

Yes they do, unless the site is a frames site. If the borders are
identical in every page, and the pages load quickly, the appearance can
be the borders do not reload.

Your pages are flat pages (no frames) with shared borders.
The shared borders are part of the page, and will load with every page.
The images in the borders need to be optimised for the web - the home
page adds up to nearly half a megabyte, most of which is in the images
in the shared borders. Reduce the size of these (use Irfanview - its
free) - in some cases both the file size and also the length and height,
will reduce the weight of all the pages considerably, thus reducing the
bandwidth required.

I reduced a 64kb .bmp to 4kb .jpg using these suggestions:

How to reduce saved file size from XX to YY KB?
A: There is no one-click solution for that, sorry.
1. Open an image.
2. Go to menu Image->Resize/Resample and reduce the image dimensions in
pixels.
3. Go to menu File->Save as, choose JPG and save as new file (see also
JPG save options like: lower JPG quality, uncheck EXIF, etc.).
4. Look at the file size of the new file. If still too big, repeat the
steps, using smaller pixel size and/or lower quality, etc.
X. For many images, use File->Batch Conversion, Advanced options.

It does not look bad at all. Any specific preferences for how to do this?

Just follow those instructions. The page, with all the images, should
be no larger than about 60KB - you have (had) images alone that are
larger than this.

Make sure you have a copy of the images before you start - you can
always make them smaller, but getting back is impossible.

Quality is subjective - in my experience saving a .jpg containing text I
can compress down to 80% of its original file size, but pure images (no
text) can be compressed a lot further than this.

Thx, Tom, but the issue wasn't on the server; it was on my local macine.
What did finally work was to receate the banner on the index page
(insert->web component->included content->choose banner).

I used Irfan and now there's nothing in the borders over 15kb. Do you think
this will work?

R

Ronx

It's a lot better - Home pageis only half the size it was.
However, some of the images can be reduced still further. For example,
dancers.jpg is 12K on your site, I have reduced it to 4K with no visible
loss of quality.

As I said, keep a backup before making changes.
The Soukous Radio image is still too big at 57K - it can be reduced to
5K by changing the size (to the display size - 327x69), compression to
50% and dpi to 96 - and it looks OK.
