We are using a shared excel workbook with about 10-12
worksheets with interlinked cells. The file is located in
a shared folder on one of the PCs on the LAN is routinely
updated by different users at the same or different time
by different users from different PCs on the LAN.
Following problems have been encountered and intermittent
instability noticed in the course of usage of this file:
(1) The file size becomes much higher than actual size as
it is kept in sharing and the remains so for long
periods. Intermittently removing it from sharing and
restoring the sharing back helps reduce the size a bit
but not much.
(2) Sometimes the file can be opened from the PC where it
is located but cannot be opened by any of the other PCs
in LAN with the message that "Excel has encountered a
problem/ Send error report etc". The file with loss of
all formatting & cell links then gets recovered sometimes
by excel.
Kindly let me know if above behaviour is inherent to
Excel files and are there any utilities/ patches for
avoiding this instability and recovery of the file.
