Shared workbook strange files

E

Eugene van Rooyen

We have a shared xls with the following properties:

* Allow changes by more than one user at the same time
* Keep change history for 30 days
* Update changes when the file is saved
* Ask me which changes win

What we have at the moment in the directory where this file is
situated, is all strange kinds of files, i.e.

D4FFA000
FFCD2000

The extension on these file types just shows "File", and when I open
them the content seems to be the same as that of the XLS file.

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated. By the way, will it make much of a
difference that we use Excel 2003/2002/2000 on different machines that
access this worksheet?

Hi Eugene,
This is the normal sequence, to protect your data from loss...

When Excel works on a file it renames and saves a copy of the original in the
same directory with a random name comprised of 8 hex digits with no extension. If Excel
was terminated you may still have this file. When Excel completes normally
the new version is saved again and the original is deleted and the new version
is renamed to the original version.

Thank you David!

I thought as much, but what bothers me in this case is that the temp
files are not being removed afterwards... This might be because:

a) Someone is not logging off excel properly (unlikely?)
b) The folder this file is sitting in has very limited permissions,
though the file permissions are correct.

Any ideas?

Tx again,

Eugene

Hi Eugene,
Yes permissions on a server can be a problem both with
Norton Antivirus and with administrators, but I don't have any
information on where to find the solutions to those problems.

Surely everyone with NAV running on servers shouldn't have to call Norton.
