Shared workbook vs Sharepoint

We manage a shared workbook in 2007 with its usual issues.
I am considering either a database solution or sharepoint
Due to concurrent editing occuring in a small time windows I an unsure if sharepoint will work and lock the file when users want access
Your thoughts please gentlemen
