Sharepoint setup exception on install

I'm doing an install Project Server 2007 for the first time, but on a pretty
old machine that has been used for many other things. I'm at the point where
I'm running the "SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard"
It gets to task 4 of 10 and then I get an exception:

Failed to secure the SharePoint resources. An execption of type
System.Security.Principal.IdentityNotMappedException was thrown. Some or all
identity references could not be translated.

Then when I check the config log, I find:

Task secureresources has failed with an unknown exception
02/15/2008 15:17:05 11 ERR Exception:
System.Security.Principal.IdentityNotMappedException: Some or all identity
references could not be translated.

I've looked and looked, but I have no idea what is causing this. Can anyone
help?

Given the colourful history of the server, I'd be inclined to perform a clean
install of the OS before attempting an install of PS2007.
