SharePoint (WSS) Alerts when Pending Content Approval

I would like "Readers" to NOT receive an alert for a list item which content
approval is turned on until the content is approved. What's happening is that
even a Reader gets an email that a new item has been added and they can click
on the link and see the content (despite the fact that it is pending
approval).

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Can you tell me how you got the reader to see the pending in an alert?
We are trying to set up workflow for tickets for sale and using
approval.

Hi Janet,

They don't see the "pending" until they click on the link that takes them to
the item. At that point they see that it is pending, although they also see
all the content.
