sharing Excel file

Hello,

I'd like to set up a file on our network that will allow for anyone t
open up a read-only version of the file, and anyone with the knowledg
of a password to open up an editable version of the file.

I went to Tools --> Protection --> Protect Sheet and this effectivel
created a read-only version of the file, unless the person has
password, which is what I wanted. The problem is when someone opens u
a read-only version of the file, and then someone else goes in an
tries to edit it. The person trying to edit is forced to open up
read-only version of the file, without being able to use the passwor
to unprotect the worksheet.

It appears as though the person who opens up the file first is the onl
one able to edit it in this case.

Is there any way around this i.e. allowing the second person to open u
the file able to edit if she has the password?

Thanks for any help,

:) :)

Instead of using Tools|protection|protect sheet, you could protect the workbook
itself.

File|SaveAs|Tools|General Options|Password to Modify (xl2002)

File|SaveAs|Options|Pasword to modify (before xl2002)
