Sharing of a task between 2 resources with different % of unit

Hi,
For a specific task for which the work effort is of 1 day , I have 2
resources allocated, one at 80% (R1) and the other at 40% (R2).
Consequently, the duration of the task is 1.25 days where R1 works 0.5 day on
day 1 and R2 works 0.2 day on day 1, 0.2 day on day 2 and 0.1 day on day 3.
Can you tell what to do to spread the combined effort of R1 and R2 so that
the task is completed is less than a day of elapse time?
R1 + R2 = 120%
1 day of work = 83.33% of a days of R1 + R2 combined.
Thank you,
Dominique.

Dominique,
First make sure the task is set for the default task type - Fixed Units,
effort driven (Project/Task Information/Advanced tab). Once that is
done, give the task a duration of 1 day. Then assign each of the two
resources, one at 80% and the other at 40%. The end result will be a
task with a duration of 0.67 days, (assuming you are using the standard
calendar with 8 hour work days), and a work content of 6.4 hours.

Hope this helps.

Hi John,
Thank you for the quick response.
I confirm that your suggestion has worked. My problem was with the sequence
of events and the column used. When I set the tasks, I was setting the
amount of work and not the period which has caused my problem.
Cheers,
Dominique.

Dominique,
OK...... so I assume that took care of your issue.

John,

This has unfortunately not solved all my problems.

In addition to the example provided earlier, I also need to add holidays on
one the of the 2 resources.

Thus, if you take the following example, for a project starting on the 18
September for 2.2 days of effort:

- R1 is on vacation on 21, 22, 23 of September
- R2 can work full time all the week
- R1 works at 80%
- R2 works at 40%

The result:
- R1 works on Monday (0.8d) and on Tuesday (0.67d)
- R2 works from Monday to wednesday at 0.2d and then on Thursday at 0.13d.
--> Period 3.67d

What I was expecting was:
- R1 works at 0.8d on Monday and Tuesday (Total: 1.6d)
- R2 works at 0.2d from Monday to Wednesday (Total: 0.8d)
--> Period 3d

Any suggestion?

Thank you,
Dominique.

Doinique,
OK, first let's clarify what you mean by "2.2 days of effort". Is that
work (which is effort but is normally specified in hours) or duration
(which is often specified as days)? Second, what is the task type (i.e.
Fixed Duration, Fixed Units, or Fixed Work and is it effort driven)?

Also, you mention that R1 is on vacation 21, 22 & 23 September but 23
September is a Saturday. I assumed you are using a standard 8/5
workweek. Are you using something different?

I tried your scenario with a default Fixed Units effort-driven task type
on a task that has an estimated duration (starting) of 2.2 days. I
didn't get any of the values you cite. In addition, the vacation days of
R1 are irrelevant because the task finishes before R1 goes on vacation.

I need more clarification.
