Shortcut Keys Sopped Functioning

I have for long been using the shortcut keys for symbols through the
Insert>Symbol>More Symbols...>Shortcut Key...
Today this feature just stopped functioning, and when I entrer the shortcut
keys a lot of letters appear on the ribbon.

What would the problem be please?

I use Office 2007 Enterprise and my OS is Vista Ultimate

Sounds like you are holding down the Alt key by itself for too long.

I have just discovered that I had forgotten to 'Add...' and then check the
template that I was using, to the 'Checked items are currently loaded', in
the Developer>Document Template feature of Word 2007.

When I inserted and marked the template, the issue was resolved.
