Should I Use Access For This?

I have a list of 1400 students in Excel. I want to pick out a student
by scanning in the ID number barcode on an ID card for admission into
lunch. After I have done this I want to be able to print out a list of
all the students that have entered that lunch.

I am very new to Access so is there a book that I could use to
accomplish this if it is possible?

Access is the tool of choice for this. I can provide the barcode hardware
and software and the Access database to do this for you. Contact me at my

Then I guess I can do all of this with Access?

Yes, much more easily than with Excel (after the relational-database
learning curve, which is not trivial). Access is a more appropriate
application for this task, IMHO.
