Show Hide Document Formatting

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

My older version of Word for PC had a button on the "edit" menu called "Show Hide" that allowed you to see the paragraph marks, carriage returns, indents, tabs, etc. (It's the button with the backward "P" on the formatting toolbar).

I looked for this function on Word for the Mac but couldn't find it so figured it wasn't available. However, I accidentally hit one of the control keys along with another keyboard key, and the paragraph formatting suddenly appeared in my document. It's nice to know it's still around, but HOW DO YOU TURN IT OFF AND ON? Need to know how to turn it off more than on.

Thanks,

Gail

Hi Gail,

Welcome to the Mac!

The same button is on the Standard toolbar in Word 2008. The shortcut
seems to be cmd-8.

Dear Daiya,

Thanks for your quick response to my inquiry, and indeed cmd-8 does work! However, the button does not appear on the Standard toolbar, nor on the Edit drop down menu. No mention of it in the Help, either. Do you have any ideas as to why?

Thanks!

Hi Gail -

Just out of curiosity, what controls do you have on the Standard Toolbar?

If the ¶ is actually missing we can get it added back, but let's make sure
that' the problem first. If it is, you should be able to Control/Right-Click
the toolbar & select Reset Toolbar. What happens if you do?

Yes, yes, it came back! After resetting the toolbar, it popped into view.

Thanks, Bob.

Ahh, I see the problem now:

When I first open Word and a new document window appears, it does not show the Standard Toolbar even though it is default selected in the menu. So, each time a new document is opened, I have to reset the Standard Toolbar to make it appear. Bummer.

That shouldn't be.....Word should remember the Standard toolbar is
active. Odd.

There is a little lozenge in the top right that collapses toolbars into
nonexistence. Click it a few times until you are absolutely positive
your toolbars are expanded and visible. Now does the Standard TB stick?

Dayla,

I clicked the lozenge a couple of times and that seems to have un-stuck it so that now when a new doc comes up the toolbar is there.

Thanks for helping me resolve this small but annoying problem.

Glad you are sorted. That lozenge is a system-wide Mac thing that's in
many apps, so look for it if you ever find that your toolbars have vanished.

Good advice, I shall look for it in my other Office for the Mac apps.

Thank you for your time!
