Show/ Hide Symbol

I am using Office XP with all the service pak's. In my word documents the show/hide symbol appears. When I click the show/hide icon to make it disappear so only the I-beam marks the placement of text the show/hide symbol will not disappear.

I guess you are talking about the pilcro - the backwards facing P character?
This is normally toggled by the Show/Hide command button UNLESS under Tools,
Options, View tab you have checked the Paragraph Mark option under the
Formatting Marks section.
