show/hide won't turn off

I use show/hide often (the "Paragraph" symbol on the
standard toolbar)--keeping it on most of the time.
Sometime, however, I want to turn it off to see the
document without the "reveal codes." It no longer turns
off by hitting the paragraph symbol. Does anyone know
how to fix this?

Tools, Options, View tab and deselect ALL.

No, toggling the button turns off All. What you need to deselect is all the
individual options, which are *not* toggled with the button.

Your correct (again!). I am sure that earlier versions of Word the ALL in
the View menu was a separate function that overrode the ShowAll command. Is
that just my memory playing tricks?

No. All reflects the current setting of the Show/Hide ¶ button. The button
just toggles between showing All and showing any other boxes that are
specifically checked. AFAIK, this has been true in every version, but since
most users use all or nothing, most never discover this (I use it when
creating indexes so I can toggle just Hidden text on and off).
