Show objects in "Normal View"

How can I show actual objects (vs. their field codes) in normal view?

For example, a Visio chart I copied to my document just shows as
{EMBED VISIO OBJECT 11}
Or if I add a checkbox, it shows as {FORMCHECKBOX}

I'd like to see the actual objects rather than the description. They
show up in print preview, but not in any other print view that I can
find.
