My personal preference is to disable the Office Assistant completely. If
you want, when the Assistant (or cat) shows up, right-click it and select
"Options". Uncheck each individual option or the one to totally disable
him/her. Now when you press F1 or click "Help", "Microsoft Word help", you
get the actual help window. The "Answer wizard" TAB is the same thing you
saw with the assistant, but you now have the "Index" TAB to type in a key
search word. This is what I use.

Please keep in mind that this is just my humble preference and might not be
suitable for you, but it might be worth a try. You can always click "Help",
"Show Office Assistant" and re-enable him/her if desired.
