side bar like a header

Is there a way to create a side bar along the left hand margin that will be
in the same place on each page, like a header.

indeed, access the header, and put your side bar in there. trust me, it
works.

I bumped into this description of "how to" and it does work -
essentially what you do is view header/footer, then insert a text box.
I believe the text box then lives in the header/footer layer and is
therefore repeated on each page.

yes, through header/footer you can put any object and it will repeat at each
page...
very useful trick and it works
