Simple Diagram Impossible Using Word 2007 SMARTART

The SMARTART Table Hierarchy template can model a tree but not a
forest (multiple roots) and arguably that's far more common.

You can model this:

AAAAAAAAAA
BBBBBCCCCC
DDDEEFFFGG

But you cannot model this, where the A's and H's represent parallel
roots:

AAAAAAAAAA
BBBBBCCCCC
DDDEEFFFGG
HHHHHHHHHH
KKKKKMMMM
NNNOOPPPPP

Keep in mind that you need one control for this because of the way it
scales everything as a unit (e.g., tilting the image) and you get
unsightly gaps when doing it the hard way (multiple, independent
blocks).

I'm not sure exactly what you want, but you can replicate individual
elements inside the smartart object so that you have A and H with parallel
substructures. Click on the element you want to replicate, press Ctrl+C,
Ctrl+V. You can resize the elements and drag them to where you want them.
This works fairly easily in that particular object since there are no
[built-in] connecting lines.

So, for example, Ctrl+Click on each of the six elements inside the original
structure so that all elements are selected. Press Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, and
presto! You now have two sets. As needed: select all of the elements in the
new set, then drag or nudge them up so that they're parallel to the original
set; resize the top element in the new so it's the same size as the
corresponding element in the original set.

I think I understand what the question was as I have a similar one.

I want to link three boxes on the third level of hierarchy to the two above
them. I have two supervisors equally responsible for the three workers below
them. Is this possible in the SmartArt function?

Using SmartArt - Hierarchy - Organization Chart, I was able to do what you
want. When you insert the object, you get a 1 - 1 - 3 chart (i.e., 1 element
in level 1, 1 element in level 2, and 3 elements in level 3).

Assuming you want a 1 - 2 - 3 chart (1 block on top, two in the middle, and
three on the bottom), the following worked for me:

1. Click on the single block in level 2.

2. Ctrl+Click on the connector line that extends to the right of that block.

3. Press Ctrl+C to copy the two elements that are now selected.

4. Press Ctrl+V to paste a copy of the elements into the chart.

5. The new block should still be selected, and is too close to the center
connecting line. If you tap the right cursor key, the block should get
nudged to the right. You can also drag using the mouse--pressing the Shift
key as you drag will make it easier to keep on the same horizontal level as
the box on the left.
