Single Space is spacing more than an inch

Greetings,

I'm working with a client having an odd problem. She is using OS X 9
(Panther 10.3.2) and Office v.X (10.1.5). When Paragraph formatting is
set to Single, each return is spacing more than an inch. Double spacing
is jumping more than two inches. If I set the option to Exactly (12 pt.)
then single works, but double is messed up. I've trashed the apps and
reinstalled them. I've trashed the Microsoft folder in the Preferences
folder. I've trashed the apple.microsoft. word. etc. pref file. Nothing has
resolved this. We started with 10.1.4 and upgraded the file to 10.1.5
using the updater. Still nothing.

If anyone can shed ideas on this, I'd appreciate any help.

Problems with spacing of this sort are often a result of having Justified
instead of Top set for the "Vertical alignment" (Layout tab of Page Setup),
but that affects only the spacing between paragraphs, not within paragraphs,
which means that it would not be an issue unless the client is pressing
Enter at the end of every line. And if she is doing that, then the paragraph
may well have some Space Before/After in addition to the double spacing,
which could cause this effect even if the vertical alignment were set to
Top.

To clarify further, however, note that Single and Double spacing affect the
spacing within the paragraph; Space Before/After affect the space between
paragraphs (which will be further increased by the inter-paragraph spacing
when Double spacing is used).

I've met this exactly this problem (W2000, O2000). I never pinned it down
exactly, but it seemed to relate to the point size used in the header: the
header was 32 point, and normal seemed to inherit that line spacing if set
to single or auto. Setting the line space to an exact size fixed it but of
course caused problems with all the styles based on normal.

The permanent fix was to delete the template and recreate it.
