Size 10 envelope is printing wrong

M

Even tho all the setting are "Auto", half the return address is printing off
the top of the envelope and the right-most part of the address is printing
off the right edge of the envelope.
The other pc using this printer works fine. Therefore, it must be something
in Microsoft Word 2002.

The position of the main address is determined by the offsets of the frame
that's part of the definition of the Envelope Address style. The return
address is controlled by the Envelope Return style. One or both of these
styles may be out of whack on your PC, but OK on the other PC.

See http://www.gmayor.com/changing_envelope_layout.htm for how to adjust the
settings.

Have you tried going into MSWord's Tools, envelopes/labels, options, and
picking the size of your envelope? Sometimes you have to customize it if
it's an offsize label.

The above changes the style within the word document. It does nothing to the problem of the size 10 envelope printing improperly. After following the above instructions, the return address on a size 10 envelope printed 3 inches from the left edge of the envelope; it should be a minimal distance from the edge. The main address printed 6.5 inches from the left edge. It should be further left at least an inch or two.
Also, I have never used the Envelope Address style before to address an
envelope.

I think Jay may have left out one crucial piece of information. When you
modify the Envelope Address style, you must check the "Add to template" box
in the Modify Style dialog so that the change is written to Normal.dot and
will henceforth govern the envelopes created using the Envelopes and Labels
dialog.

I had already checked the "Add to template" because of following the
instructions at
http://www.gmayor.com/changing_envelope_layout.htm.
When I enter a dummy address, go to envelopes and labels and click on "Add
to document", the envelope added above the document is a properly formatted
size 10. But when printed, it is not. Both the return and delivery address
are too far to the right. It is tho the software thinks that a size 10 is
7.5 inches instead of 9.5 inches long.

Is it possible this is a printer issue? How do the envelopes feed on your
printer?

M

Munt

Sorry this took so long to answer. I never received a notification of a reply.
Anyway, two pc's use this printer thru a router. Both use MS Word. The
other pc has no problems printing size 10 envelopes. (Please don't tell me
to print my envelopes from the other printer.) The envelopes are fed into
the Canon i550 on the right edge of the printer; standing on end, face up;
flap to the left.

FWIW, check to see that the Printing Options in the Envelopes and Labels
dialog match the way your printer feeds envelopes. Is it possible that the
other PC has a different printer driver installed? This will certainly be
the case if it's running a different OS.

M

Munt

The pc that prints the envelopes correctly has
Word 2002 (10.2627.2625) and driver Canon i550
OS is Microsoft XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service pack 2

The pc that prints the envelopes improperly has
Word 2002 (10.6764.6735)SP3 and driver Canon i550
OS is Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional 5.0.2195 Service pack 4 Build 2195

So you are actually dealing with different versions of Word *and* Windows
(and the latter will result in a different printer driver), which will
explain why you're seeing different results. Unfortunately, it doesn't
suggest any way to solve the problem.

One last comment..... It used to work fine from both pc's. Only in the last
month or so, has it been wrong. Thanks for all your suggestions.

I have Word 97, Epson CX4600 on a USB hub and Epson 660 on a port replicator.
I could print envelopes at one time but I think after I printed a letter size
envelope and I think it prompted to make a template and I probably said yes.
That may heve screwed up my envelope creation. I followed the "Changing Word
Envelope Layouts" instructions but to no avail. After playing around with the
frame and text wrapping I was able to print an envelope address on a 8.5 x
11 sheet using the face up third from the right position. It printed ok but I
can't put a #10 envelopoe in that location on the CX 4600. The CX4600 is not
wide enough to acceopt the horizontal envelope position. The same thing
happened when I used the Epson 660 so I disconnected it and I can print #10
envelopes on it ok. I hope someone has solved the problem. I'll follow the
discussion. Thanks

For some reason Word has never gotten the right envelope orientation
for Epson printers. See
http://www.gmayor.com/epson_envelope_orientation.htm for two ways of
dealing with it.

Thanks Jay for the Registry modification suggestion for the #10 envelope
printing problem. I changed the 7 to 3 for my Epson CX4600 but the envelope
printed with the delivery address centered but only 1/2" from the top. The
only option for printing is the 3rd from right, face up, clockwise. The
printer does not respond to the other options with #10 envelope. I have not
tried the macro not knowing much about getting at Word's start up directory.

Thanks Jay for the leads. I changed the registry but to no avail. After the
holiday its time to tackle the problem again. Is there any way to restore the
envelope printing capability to the default? Can I just reinstall Word 97 or
do I have to uninstall it first?

I take it you didn't backup the registry as adviseded? If you were able to
import the backup it would restore the original settings.

You can remove the envfeed_7 entry from the registry and then when you make
the changes in the envelope editor it should re-enter the required settings.
Back it up first!

The macro alternative which you appear to have dismissed should force the
required settings. The Word startup folder is defined at tools > options >
file locations > startup. Save a document containing the macro as a template
into that folder.

Alternatively add the macro to your normal.dot
http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm

If you are using a recent operating system, you could roll back Windows to a
time when you know it worked correctly.
