Size of pst file

Hello

I recently wanted to find / replace area codes for my
telephone numbers that had changed. I did the following:

* exported the contacts to Excel
* did the replacement
* deleted the original contacts
* imported the contacts from Excel

The file size of the contacts.pst increased from 2.4MB to
3.9MB. I have tried compacting the new file but it makes
no difference. Can anyone tell me why the file size blew
out so much?
