Size of spooled file to printer - and compress pictures

From within word, I am able to link 30 jpg's (each of which are 1 MEG), and
my word doc file size remains about 80K: which I expected because of the
LINKS. Then inside Word, I resize each jpg down to 2 inches X 2 inches.

When I print the file, the spooler, shows the full 30 meg. Apparently,
resizing them to 2X2 doesn't change their true size/resolution.

Is there a way to "truly" resize these images so that it doesn't load the
printer like that?

Or do they have to be reduced by MsPaint or Photoshop or something first,
and then be linked? Any help is appreciated.

I've also on occassion INSERTED the pictures, saved the file, noted the file
size (much bigger than linked of course), and then used the Compress Picture
icon on the Picture toolbar to compress all pictures to 72 screen res, saved
the file and noted the file size. It seems to have no effect on file size.

Any ideas on either one would be great.
