Skills for Generic Resorces

Gaetano Galletta

Hi all, I've got a question about skill assignement to generic resources.
I've got a skill structure like this:

Microsoft.Develop.c#.junior
Microsoft.Develop.c#.senior
Microsoft.Develop.vb.junior
Microsoft.Develop.vb.senior
Microsoft.Develop.SQL.senior
Microsoft.Develop.SQL.junior

Obviously a developer can know c# AND vb AND sql, so I've build the skill
structure as a multi-level skill.
It works very well when I filter resouces by skill and when I replace
manually the resources with project professional..
The second step would be to create generic resources and assign only this
type of resources to projects, so the portfolio modeler could substituite
generic resources based on availability and skills of the real ones.

How many generic resources do I need to create? Do I need to create one
generic resource for EVERY skill? But how then to assign a generic resourc
whith TWO or more skills? (eg: a vb senior developer whith junior-level skill
in sql)
Do I need to create generic resource with all the combination of muli-level
skill that my project manager usually need?

I'm very confused about that ...

Thanx
Gaetano

I would suggest you identify a primary skill (e.g.
Microsoft.Develop.SQL) and associate that with the generic resource.
If you go deeper than that you start to exclude people when looking for
a match. Clearly the level of detail for generics depends on your
planning process but generally need to err on the side of practicality
and keep life as simple as possible for your project managers.

I note your use of Portfolio Analyser - Do you get any value from this
capability?

regards

Mike
