Slack Calculation In Summary Task - Project 2003

Bryan Eaton

I am trying to show the minimum slack value for summary tasks on my project.
It seems only to show Maximum, which seems to be not very helpful in managing
a project.

Is there a switch or option burried somewhere to set this to minimum?

At the moment I have set a Customized Duration field to equal the Finish
Slack and set the rollup to minimum and need to hit F9 to get it to calculate
each time.

What do you mean by "show minimum slack?" The slack on a single task (or
summary) isn't a range of values, it's only one number. True, there are two
kinds of slack, free slack and total slack, but that's not the same thing as
"minimum and maximum slack." In everyday language, Total Slack is the
amount of time a task could get delayed without delaying the project ending
while Free Slack is the amount of time it could be delayed without delaying
a direct successor. Either one of those is a single discrete number, not a
range. When you use the terms "minimum slack" and "maximum slack" as
applied to a task, what precisely are you referring to?

That looks like the way to do it. To avoid having to press F9 all the time,
verify Autocalc is turned on: Tools/Options/caclulations (tab) select
Autocalculate.

As an aside, I have never run into a problem with summary task slack being a
min or max value since I never concern myself with slack on summary tasks.
What I do is hide the summaries when looking at slack and other drivers.

Good catch Steve, I just started blindly typing an answer as to "HOW" not "is
it really that" .... As you pointed out, this is a task row calcuation, not a
roll up.
