Slide Layout Gallery not available

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel When I create a new blank presentation, I have several slide layouts available in the template. However, if I change to a different theme, then the slide layouts do no longer show up in the gallery. I can click the themes, transitions and see thumbnails for these, but not (eg no longer) for the layouts. Is this a known bug? Or am I doing something wrong?

Hi,

Each template has its own set of slide layouts. Applying a different
theme also can change the layouts that are available.

You can add layouts, delete layouts, and customize layouts. From the
View menu choose Master > Slide Master. The biggest one at the top on
the left is the slide master. The smaller ones underneath are layout
masters. It's these layouts that you find available to you in Normal view.

There's an entire chapter of the Office 2008 for Mac All-in-One For
Dummies book devoted to this topic. It's Chapter 4 of the PowerPoint
book on pages 539 through 548.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I know there are different layouts. I have switched back and forth to some of the templates that were supplied with Office. And the default white template has about 10 layouts. However, and that is my question, I am unable to select one of these. Does this sound familiar?

Hi again

Perhaps you are not using Normal view (View > Normal). When working in
Normal view you should be able to apply a slide layout. (Slide Layouts
tab of the Elements bar with Apply to Slide selected at the left end of
the bar).

Hello,

I'm a long-time PPT for PC user (mostly 2003) and have recently purchased a Mac with the 2008 version. What I am finding frustrating is that in Slide Master View it now has numerous Slide Layouts under each master which used to be separate.

It was so much more efficient to have the Slide Layout option separate from the Master Slides. I work at a large company where we're still on PPT 2003 and use tons of masters. It's fine on the PC but when I open it on the Mac 2008 version it multiplies the master slides exponentially and I hate that. For instance, there are 76 master slides and all I want to view in Slide Master are those 76 slides and NOT the 8 additional layouts under EACH master. So instead of having just the 76 there are now 608 I have to sift through!! Is there a way to either delete or at least turn off having to view all these extra slide layout options?

It was so much cleaner when the Slide Layout option was a separate menu.

Thank You,

Heidi

I'm a long-time PPT for PC user (mostly 2003)
and have recently purchased a Mac with the 2008 version. What I am finding frustrating
is that in Slide Master View it now has numerous Slide Layouts under each master which
used to be separate.

The same change happens on the PC when you move to 2007.

Where before we were unable to modify or create AutoLayouts, we can now do so.
Nice feature but it meant changing the way PPT works.
It was so much more efficient to have the Slide Layout option separate from the
Master Slides. I work at a large company where we're still on PPT 2003 and use tons of
masters. It's fine on the PC but when I open it on the Mac 2008 version it multiplies
the master slides exponentially and I hate that.

It may only seem that there are that many masters. Notice that for each slide master,
its layouts are shown beneath it, indented a bit, and by default there are eleven or so
layouts for each slide master.

I suspect the root of the problem is this: when you from 2008/2007 to an earlier
version, each auto layout gets converted to a new slide master in the old format.

When you bring that file back into 2007/2008, those masters are retained but now each
one gets its fair share of default autolayouts. If you go back a version, each of
THOSE may become a new layout and so on. If only they'd proliferate past a crisis
point and, like lemmings, all jump off the nearest cliff into the sea.

The best advice I can give is to get used to the new way of doing things.

AND by all means avoid bumping files back and forth between versions, 'cause that's a
true disaster-in-waiting.

those 76 slides and NOT the 8 additional layouts under EACH master. So instead of
having just the 76 there are now 608 I have to sift through!! Is there a way to either

Hi Heidi,

In older versions of PowerPoint you did not have any control over the
slide layouts that you could choose from. You used whatever Microsoft
gave you and then changed them on a per-slide basis if you wanted to.

In PowerPoint 2008 for the first time you have the ability to create
slide layouts of your own design using the new Masters toolbar and the
small slide layouts that you encountered under the slide master.

The slide layouts still follow the slide master, so you should always
format the slide master before formatting any customized layouts.

You can add additional slide masters. Each time you add a new master
slide it comes with a pre-set group of layouts that you can customize or
delete or do whatever you please with.

When you save a theme, these masters and templates are saved as part of
the the theme.
