Slide Master is supposed to allow you to make changes intended for all slides: font, font size, font color, layout, etc. But they just don´t work.

I´ve tried all those changes, but the slides keep the same format (font, size, color) they had when I first created the presentation from a Word document.

So far, Office2008 looks to me just like a "face" change... nothing more.

Yes, but only to text and other content in placeholders. These are the "Click
here..." blocks you see on all new slides and that you can format in Master view.

color) they had when I first created the presentation from a Word document.

Check to see if the text is in a placeholder. Select all the text in one block and
delete it, leaving just the block itself. If PPT doesn't replace the text with some
kind of "Click here" text, then it's not a placeholder; its formatting won't be
controlled from the master.

If it *is* a placeholder, then you may be running into another feature. If you put
text in a placeholder then manually override the text formatting on a slide, PPT
assumes that you did it for a reason, that you DON'T want the text to follow the
master formatting, so further changes to the master won't affect the text.

You can usually get text back "on the master" by re-applying the slide layout.
Sometimes you need to do it more than once.
