slide numbers on top

Is there a way to show the slide numbers on top of full-screen pictures?
I tried in the master to order the number to the front but that did not
work.
I tried in a slide to order the picture to the back. Again no luck.
I'd appreciate your help.

Insert your pictures as backgrounds in individual slides - on an active
slide, choose Format | Background | Fill Effects | Picture and choose your
picture. Remember to click the 'Apply' button rather than 'Apply to All'.
This will keep your picture on the background.
