At the end of a slide show, how do I keep the last slide present on the screen?

Don't advance past it.

oops. I just saw you said slide show (not a presentation). To do what
you're saying, I believe you just go to the last slide and view the "Slide
Transition" from the task pane (View > Task Pane > Slide Transition) and
uncheck "Automatically after [xx seconds]".

Click on Slide Show, Slide Transition, Remove the check from the Advance on
Mouse Click box.
