Slightly different problem w/graphics in Word

These graphics are in my own and in other peoples DOCs. It definitely doesn't seem to be a problem like Tools > options > view > <anything>.

Whether in Print Layout or Preview, paging up and down makes graphics of all types come and go - they disappear entirely, get chopped up. They're still in the DOC of course but steps have to be taken constantly to refresh them and I can't do any of that in Preview mode.

I can select and Format Picture, make some change to
Layout and get it back, lose it again, change it again, etc. In my own DOCs these graphics are usually Insert | Picture | From File and they may be JPG, BMP, WMF, GIF - makes no diff. Sometimes I try cutting them out and Paste Special choices - none of them has helped.

Same problem happens with Insert | Picture | New drawing. Seems more like a Graphics Adapter problem but doesn't happen anywhere but my new Word 2002. Would appreciate any thoughts on this. Writing and reviewing DOCs is greatly hampered by this problem.

The conventional wisdom is that this is a graphics adapter problem, but I
can testify that it can happen even on a brand-new computer with the lastest
whizbang video card and driver. I experience it more with TIFFs than
anything else.
