Slow access to files in sub directories

It takes 20 seconds to change subdirectories in all my MS
Office programs after I crashed a big MSWord file. I have
reinstalled MSOffice, defragged my hard drive, etc. with
no improved results. Any suggestions?

Neither reinstalling Office, nor defragging will clear up the mess caused by
