slow after new service pack

Immediately upon installing the newest service pack for XP, my Outlook 2003
performace slowed considerably (when opening new messages, about 1 minute to
preview, even without attachments) and deleting or reorganizing old messages.
Web browsing speed is unchanged, so I assume my internt server is not at
fault.

I have unchecked the "remove extra lines" function. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Have you compacted your PST file, presuming you're using one? Gone to Office
Update to patch Office with all critical updates as well?

Thanks for replying.
How do I compact a PST file (I don't know what that is)? And yes, I get
regular updates for Office.
I'm thinking now I should go through the "exceptions" list for the firewall
protection that was part of the service pack. Hmmm. Any other suggestions?

If you're using a Personal Folders file in outlook (as opposed to connecting
to an Exchange server), that's a PST file. Right-click on your top-level
folder in your folder view, go to properties, advanced, compact (from
memory -sorry, I don't have a PST file loaded here).

Well, you don't need to open anything inbound to access mail, so I wouldn't
play with that too much.
