Slow cursor/display/typing rate

Hi, The keystrokes that I type appear on the screen at only the rate that the
cursor blinks. It is very frustrating.
Can't seem to find any previous thread on this.
Has anyone come across this before?
It makes using Word 2007 virtually impossible to use.

It's probably a problem with the operating system, and not just one program.

I've notice that with each successive upgrade Windows XP gets slower and
slower.

I could type faster on my 8 Mhz 8088 DOS box using MS DOS 3.2 than I can on my
current computers with over a Ghz clock speed.

I find editing takes much longer, because the cursor overshoots -- move it
back, and for several seconds nothing happens, then it jumps back 20 spaces
when I wanted it to go back 5. Move it forward and it overshoots again,
because I hold the key down until it moves, and it can take anything from 1-5
seconds before it moves. In MS DOS the movement was instantaneous.

The clock speed of computers is more than 100 times faster, but the cursor
speed is 100 times slower than it was 20 years ago.
