Slow Mouse movement in Word

I have noticed that frequently, when Word has focus, my mouse moves very
slowly. This happens most of the time, but not always. For example, if
Word is the only active application and I run task manger the mouse
movements are sluggish when Word is the active application. If I then click
on the menu Task Manager menu bar, the mouse revives. Clicking on MS Word
then sends the mouse into a stupor. Is there any way to prevent this ?

I am running WIndows 2000 / Office 2003 SP2.

TIA,

I'd suggest updating your graphics, printer and mouse drivers making sure
that you have the latest available. Then testing Word in Safe Mode to se if
mouse response is similar or better. From Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. How's the mouse now?

Terry,

Thanks for the suggestion. Before installing any new drivers, I tried
running Winword with the /a switch. My mouse was no longer slowed.
Unfortunately (fortunately ?) I have not been able to reproduce the problem
since running this test. So I'm puzzled, but happy. If I can get to it
happen again, I will experiment further. I did a search and found that the
/a switch does not load normal.dot or any addins, so that gives me something
to work with.

Thanks,

Pete K

Running Word with the /a switch (Safe Mode) does more than is openly
explained: it is not uncommon that running it once clears some weird
problem. You may find the problem won't recur.

Generally, a slow mouse movement can be a hint that CPU resources are
getting hogged. To many processes or maybe even a (shudder) virus. Except
for the latter, when I have had that trouble I have just restarted Word on
its own, and all is OK. How much RAM do you have?.

aalaaan,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm pretty sure that it isn't a CPU or memory
problem. Even with Word active, the mouse is fine until I click on the
taskbar to activiate Word, then it slows to a crawl. With TaskManager
active at the time, I can see that CPU usage is very low. As soon as I
click on another application (to deactivate Word), the mouse speeds up. As
I mentioned earlier, the problem has disappeared since running Word with the
/a switch. I have 384 Mb of RAM.

Thanks Terry, maybe I'll try the /a switch when I have problems with other
applications... ;-)
