Slow performance after converting from 97 to 2000

I have an access 97 database (with a front end db linked
to a back end db). As we have numerous Access 2000 users
who use it I decided to create a copy of the front end and
convert it to Access 2000. The conversion went fine, but
its performance is appalling. It can take minutes for a
form to open etc. Any ideas on what I can do to fix it?
