Slow performance and crashes with docx/xlsx

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Office 2008 has been performing sluggishly when I use the .docx/.xlsx options on my MacBook Air. Scrolling takes forever. Saving them as .doc/.xls seems to improve performance. Even so, the .doc file does not load well into InDesign.
