Slow Performance From Remote Networks and Telecommute (Through VPN)

My application runs very responsive unless I try to connect remotely (from
different city using network connection) or by telecommute (from somebodys
home using iPass and VPN). At that point, the performance downgrades up to
the point of making the application unworkable (minutes just to skip from one
record to another one). For what I have been reading in this website, the
problem has no solution since it's attributed to the functionality of the JET
engine. Am I missing something??
