Slow response from outlook

Outlook delays a lot while I'm typing, I have to wait on
the computer to catch up before I continue to type. This
morning I started getting an error msg telling me to load
a disk, when all I'm during is checking my email. I have
a Dell system with Windows XP. Please assist.
