Slow Word 2003

I have office 2003. All programs open quickly except for Word and Excel. They
are really, really slow. I use Zone Alarm, Spysweeper, and AVG. It worked the
same with AVAST. I use Spysweeper on my two other machines. They work fine.
In fact, I used my network to open a file on the slow machine and the file
opened just fine.
I tried reinstalling Office. Didn't help. I have done all the updates. I'm
lost.

Sussertown,
I am having the same problem (i opened a thread this am called
"Office 2003 Documents Will Not Open from anything but the
application").
Is the problem you are having that when you double-click a file to
open it it takes about three minutes or so? When it does open, it
doesn't open the document but just the application?
Can you open the application and then the file, and it will work
fine?
How about logging into the PC with another account? All other
accounts in my case work fine on the PC.

Hoping to help because no one has commented on mine......

I deleted and reinstalled the standard windows fonts. Didn't help. The Office
program has never been run from a network so those things don't apply.
the printer is connected directly and there is only one printer on the port.

Try this
Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

If the drive says "none" does that mean it's a phantom connection? I deleted
the one I found. Didn't make a difference yet.

This problem can also be caused by ACT!8. The preload setting needs to be
changed from -stayrunning to -preload in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

How did you know about ACT!8? Did you see one of my posts somewhere else? I
don't know yet if it worked. I've suspected ACT!8 for quite a while now.
Once, while running ACT I was able to get everything running smoothly, but
then it stopped again. I'll let you know.

1. It didn't work.
2. It now makes me wait while ACT loads. I don't want it to load.

I have a client that is experiencing the same issue. Here's more fuel for the
fire: If he bouble-clicks on a flie located on his external usb drive, it
opens normally and quickly. If he opens Excel first and then opens a document
on the c: drive, the document opens normally. I have re-registered his apps,
defragged the drive, tried disabling DDE support for xls documents. I was
leaning towards running spinrite on the drive, but since I see others
experiencing similar issues...

So it seems that the problem is realted to ACT8? Have up updated your ACT to
the latest version?

I had a similar problem, and found that the HP digital imaging monitor in the
system tray was to blame. Once I killed that (and removed it from my startup
menu) the problem went away.
