Small home network - Office won't open - purchased 2 copies?

I have 2 iMacs - one upstairs and one downstairs on an airport extreme
wireless network. I puchased a version of Office with the 1st iMac
and the license was for one computer (I found out by trying to load it
on my second iMac and it wouldn't let me).

So last week I puchased another MS Office Student Teacher version
(good for 3 computers) and put it on my 2nd iMac. With Excel open
downstairs(or any Office program) - I couldn't open any Office program
upstairs because it said it was already in use. I don't get it - I
purchased two separate versions residing on 2 hard drives - but they
can't be open on a network at the same time - the last 5 numbers on
the product Id's are different- what gives??

I'm completely confused! Thanks in advance for any insight.

On the second iMac, you can delete the settings file that stores this
information. Doing so will allow you to re-enter the new key from the
Student & Teacher Edition. Instructions for doing so can be found at J.E.
McGimpsey's site.

Otherwise, you'll need to remove and re-install Office X. Insert the Office
X CD, then open the Value Pack. Click the Value Pack Installer. Check
"Remove Office", then click "Continue". Run the "Remove Office" utility.
When done, re-install Office X from the CD.

Then, download and install the latest Office X updates, which are 10.1.2,
10.1.4, and 10.1.5 (10.1.3 is unnecessary). They¹re available from
Microsoft.

If you're still having problems, do the same thing on the 1st iMac, using
one of the other keys provided by the Student & Teacher Edition.

1st tried to find those hidden OfficePID files based on the web site
advice. I found them, but I can't delete them for some reason.

Then I did the uninstall office from the value-pak - but that doesn't
seem to delete those Office PID files- which I now have 3 sets with
different dates from when I try to install office.

The funny thing is - it asked for my product key when opening word -
which I can do - but it won't let me open Excel or Powerpoint because
it says I'm violating the license agreement.

This pretty much sucks - my wife is using word & excel downstairs -
but I can't use them upstairs even though I purchased 2 leagal copies.

Just figured it out after I posted ; I didn't realize that if you put
a file into the trash it can still open from there (which it was);

When I emptied the trash - the old OfficePID files were gone for good
leaving me with my current and legal Product Key and all my Office
applications open (even though my wife is using office downstairs on
our home network) - no conflicts!

Thanks for your prompt response and excellent advice - you made my
weekend!

A happy switcher

Thanks for your feedback! I didn't think to put emptying the trash in
the instructions - I've fixed that, now.
