how do I move the line connectors in a smart art hierarcy?

Well, basically you don't 
SmartArt Objects are pre-constructed for
specific flow patterns. You can move/resize the shapes & the connectors will
respond accordingly, but you can't simply move the connectors themselves.
If you want a "custom" hierarchy you need to create it yourself using the
preferred AutoShapes & Connectors.
