Smart button won't go away

Gang,
As I'm pasting some copied text into various cells in a spreadsheet
(basic cmd-V), the Smart Button won't go away and it's obscuring text
in the cells that it's sitting atop of. I can't get it to go
away--pressing escape, selecting one of the options in the smart button
menu, scrolling off screen then back...

Any thoughts? I'm using Excel 11.3.5 (current as far as I know) and OS
10.4.10.

TIA,
_d

Oh my, that's a persistent little bugger! What I found was that if you
hit escape while the marching ants (marquee) are still active (you see
them around the copied cells immediately after 'copy'), poof! the dumb
smart button disappears. But woe to you if you do something (anything)
that stops the ants. Well, if you go to a blank cell and just type
something, SB goes away. Better yet, do a save (never a bad idea).
btw, after the marching ants retreat, pasting will paste only the
contents of the source cell - no formats, no formulas. So you could
regard a persisting SB as a warning that you might be missing
something.

You also have the option of going to Excel> Preferences> Edit & clearing the
check for Show Paste Options Buttons... FWIW, I personally prefer to
Right-Click & use Paste Special if I want something other than a straight
paste, anyway.

Thanks, folks. I did see the preference option...I do make modest use
of the smart buttons (when dragging the corner of a cell to copy it,
and change the copied cells to a series, for example), but could
probably work around it just as well. Maybe I'll play around with the
settings and see which way bugs me least :)

Now *that* is interesting, and could very well explain another source
of occasional frustration. Sometimes I wonder why pasting includes
formats and sometimes it doesn't...

Although I am much more frustrated with pasting and formatting in Word,
where it seems to have a mind of its own sometimes ;-)

thanks,
