SmartArt formatting

I'm trying to develop a "horizontal labeled heirarchy" SmartArt graphic for
giving our programmers a map to follow in developing a data system and the
irony of this multiple-branching graphic and the frustration at
organizational logic I'm encountering while navigating this rediculous
interface is almost comic. I'm trying to format a column in the chart so all
the boxes are distributed evenly, but it only allows me to align to some
imaginary grid. How can I get this graphic to keep its shape as I add boxes?

Additionally, how can I get all the columns to be the same size and
distributed evenly and in addition to that, how can I get the boxes to even
stay within the columns?! As a final question, what exactly is "Smart" about
this feature anyway? It's not intuitive, the shapes overlap and go all crazy
sizes when you add more boxes than the template, and there's no way to "link"
the objects so they all follow any manual formatting you do to one box.
