Scanning this file with McAfee causes my laptop to power off (without
shutting down). I'm thinking about deleting the file, but I'm not sure what
it does and how easy it would be to replace it if necessary. I'm running the
Office 2007 Suite.

Chknbwl,
Rename the file extension .bac.

If problem solved, good.

Download the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and run it. (KB 890830)

Do not download a replacement for that file from "googled" locations.

You also might want run an online scan of your computer. A safe and reliable website for such as: http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

From the F-Secure website, download F-Secure Blacklight and run it. This is another rootkit remover tool.

Thank you for your reply and your suggestions. I renamed the file extension
..bac as directed. Then I ran the MSRT. My laptop powered off during the
scan when it got to the folder containing the file.
