SMTP fails error 0x800ccc69

I am unable to send mail via the Orange (Mobile Internet provider) SMTP
server with error 0x800ccc80 reported (or 'None of the authentication methods
supported by this client are supported by your server' if Authentication is
switched on). I can send email via our ISP Broadband connection without
problems.

Can you suggest possible causes?

Sorry should have added that this is Outlook 2007 and Orange have checked my
mail settings.
