smtp notifications being rejected by smtp server

Task notifcation e-mails are not being received from
users. End users are on Lotus Notes e-mail. I tried
pointing prj server towards both the notes server and the
built in smtp server on IIS. The error in the event log
says "server rejected 1 or more recipient addresses.
550.5.7.1 Unable to relay. I suspect it has something to
do with the formatting or type of e-mail addresses the
users have but I am not sure exactly how prj server sends
the messages to the smtp server.

I think the key to pursue here is the "unable to relay." Your server may be
rejecting the "from address" you're using for Project Server emails. Try
making it an actual email address on the server. This will help you diagnose
other bad email addresses as the rejects will have a place to go.
