SMTP works in OE but not Outlook

SMTP server works in OE but not Outlook

This one is really puzzling me...

I use two different dialup connections and only one of them enables me to
send email in Outlook.
When I use the Tiscali connection, with smtp server settings configured in
both programs to smtp.tiscali.co.uk, both OE and Outlook send email as
expected.
However, when I connect with Wanadoo, with the settings changed accordingly
in the two programs, only OE works as expected. With Outlook, the emails
take 2 - 5 hours to arrive to the recipents. Neither smtp requires a log
on - just to be connected is enough. And I don't have Outlook set up to
only use a particular connection (it's configured to use any available
internet connection)
I have tested this with my own various webmail/email accounts and it's
definitely a problem on my Outlook (not on the recpients end).

I just re-installed Windows and Outlook and prior ro this the connection was
working fine, so it has something to do with my installaion/configuration of
Outlook...

Can anyone help?

Are these two accounts in a single mail profile? If so, try creating a
separate profile for each and see if that makes a difference.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean... do you mean create separate
profiles for each email address I have or separate profiles for each
connection? Both options are unworkable for me and besides, my
configuration was working fine before - it's only since i freshly installed
Outlook that I'm having this weird issue.

I replied to this in microsoft.public.outlook - if you're going to post to
multiple groups, please do so with a single post...

In any case, the delay is a problem with the wanadoo server and not
Outlook. Once Outlook has handed the message off to the server (which has
been done if the message is in Sent Items), delivery is entirely the
server's responsibility and Outlook can do nothing about it.

But why does mail sent via Outlook Express using the wanadoo server have no
problem? This is what I'm trying to investigate - the difference between
OE's relationship with the smtp server and Outlook's apparently more complex
one.

You'll have to ask wanadoo - it may be that they have an anti-spam program
or something that takes longer to digest an Outlook message, but that seems
unlikely. Once the message is in Outlook's Sent Items folder, there is no
more relationship between Outlook and the server and anything that happens
thereafter is purely server-side.

If you send messages via Outlook and OE at the same time, is there a
difference in the time it takes them to arrive?
