How/where can I temporarily disable the 'snap to grid' effect (for a logo)
in Word 2002?

Pressing Alt overrides the grid. You can turn off "Snap to grid" using Draw
| Grid on the Drawing toolbar.

To temporarily disable snap-to-grid, hold down the Alt key while you
drag the object.
